Fantastic Fest 2017 Review: Firstborn Reveals the Shattering Futility of Manhood

A mean, menacing undercurrent slithers through FirstBorn (Pirmdzimtais). It's not easily dismissed. Writer/director Aik Karapetian's previous film, The Man in the Yellow Jacket, which screened at Fantastic Fest in 2014, showcased his ability to create an abrasive, unsettling atmosphere in which anything could happen. The film revolved around a stubborn cipher of a primary character and refused to be tied down to narrative logic. It was disjointed, ambitious, and anguished, leaving a deep impression on my psyche. Taking a markedly different path, FirstBorn heads toward the same destination. Mostly it follows the travails of Francis (Kaspars Znotins) as he deals with the aftermath of a disturbing incident. Reel Suspects Nabs Worldwide Sales Rights to Drama-Thriller ‘Leviano’ (Exclusive)

Matteo Lovadina’s Paris-based Reel Suspects has acquired worldwide sales rights to Portuguese drama-thriller “Leviano,” the feature debut of Portuguese-Canadian director Justin Amorim.

The film market premieres at the Cannes Film Market in a screening on Saturday, May 20.

Set up at Portugal’s Promenade Productions, “Leviano” tells the story of three sisters whose life is turned upside down after their mother mysteriously goes missing during her 50th birthday party.

The sisters join forces with two brothers that discovered that the sisters’ brother also went missing on that same night. All they embark on a journey of self-discovery towards the unknown.

The cast includes Portuguese film and TV actors Diana Marques Guerra (“Filha do Mar”), Anabela Teixeira (“Florbela”), Ruben Rua (“A Unica Mulher”) and Joao Mota (“Coração d’Ouro”).

Film’s characters are based on women the 23-year-old writer-director Amorim has met in his own life, according to Matteo Lovadina.

First Look At Aik Karapetian's Firstborn

It was back in 2014 that Latvian director Aik Karapetian first came to our attention with the much lauded thriller The Man In The Orange Jacket. For many this was the first time they'd ever had a chance to see any Latvian film and Karapetian made one hell of an impression with his taut, meticulous work. And he's back now with a new thriller in post-production, Firstborn. A middle-aged intellectual commits an act of unintentional homicide whilst trying to regain his dignity in the eyes of his wife, but soon after it occurs to him there is a strange connection between the victim, the sudden pregnancy of his wife and the mysterious blackmailer, who tries to force him to commit yet another awful thing.
